What Are the 4 Types of Learning Styles?

The four main learning styles are visual, auditory, reading/writing, and kinesthetic. These styles reflect how people prefer to learn and retain information.
Visual Learning – Seeing
- Learning through seeing, such as pictures, diagrams, and graphs
- Also known as “spatial” learning
- Visual learners may benefit from graphic organizers, presentations, and handouts
Auditory Learning – Listening
- Learning through listening, such as lectures, discussions, and verbal explanations
- Auditory learners may benefit from podcasts, audiobooks, and studying in a quiet environment
Reading/Writing Learning – Reflective
- Learning through reading and writing
- Books & Texts
- Dictionaries
- Note-Taking
Kinesthetic Learning – Feeling
- Learning through doing and experiencing, such as acting out events or using all of their senses
- Also known as “tactile” learning
- Kinesthetic learners may benefit from movement, such as pacing or playing out a scene from a book
It’s important to understand these learning styles so that instruction can be adapted for each type of learner.
